Global Competition on a Personal Scale
Friday, October 21st, 2011
Today is a proud day for UrtheCast. Today we get to announce that we have won the T-Systems Cloud Computing Challenge as part of the European-based Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) Masters competition.
The GMES Masters competition rewards the best projects and business ideas for a GMES commercial service, with the aim to support the development of GMES related entrepreneurship in Europe. The competition was initiated by the European Space Agency (ESA), the Bavarian Ministry of Economy, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and T-Systems.
More than 100 ideas were submitted in 5 categories: Best Service Challenge, Ideas Challenge, ESA App Challenge, DLR Environmental Challenge, and the T-Systems Cloud Computing Challenge. The winners from each category are then entered to win the overall GMES Master title.
The initial submission process took us through an online application, complete with questions on everything from financial backing, to specific technical requirements, to how this service benefits the consumer. Finalists were chosen to present their idea to a panel of experts, and we’re happy to say we were one of the few. After a great 6am Skype meeting with the experts in Germany, we were done. All we could do at that point was sit back and wait.
Though the competition was surely tough, UrtheCast pulled through with a win for the T-Systems Cloud Computing Challenge.
Competitions such as the GMES Masters are not your typical competitions. Rather than breeding territoriality or competitiveness, they encourage innovation and collaboration in exciting and effective ways. It is an honor to have been selected as a winner along-side these other pioneers in the global monitoring industry.
